Virtual Cancer Support Group Led by Melanie Yearow, Noble’s Clinical Counsellor
The COVID-19 Pandemic has greatly reduced our daily social interactions with not only loved ones, but even simple strangers. Cancer patients already facing loneliness and isolation may find themselves slipping deeper into those emotions.
Living with cancer is one of the most difficult and stressful challenges a person can face. Oftentimes, not even the most understanding family members and friends can fully empathize with the struggles of the disease. As a result, many cancer patients struggle with handling intense emotions such as sadness, fear and isolation — negative responses that can be further exacerbated by the social-isolation measures against COVID-19.
During these difficult times, Noble Naturopathic hopes to alleviate these burdens through our virtual cancer support group. Many studies have repeatedly shown that support groups can help people with cancer feel less hopeful to better manage their emotions; exchanging experiences and advice in dealing with the disease and its treatments helps patients feel a better sense of control over their situations, thereby reducing feelings of helplessness.
Our clinical counsellor, Melanie Yearow, will be facilitating the discussions of the virtual support group. Together in sharing common-lived experiences, group members will draw a collective voice to not feel alone, process and learn from each other’s wisdom, create a community to uplift and support one another, and empower each other through collective healing, growth and transformation.
Discussions will be unstructured in a relaxing environment, and participants are welcome to converse on topics of all manners, whether it be physical, emotional or spiritual. Individuals facing all types and stages of the disease are welcome to join.
