Vitamin D3 Injections
Vitamin D3 Injections at Noble Naturopathic
Vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin”, is an essential nutrient that functions like a hormone in the body. It plays a crucial role in maintaining strong bones and teeth, as well as a healthy immune system.
Benefits of Vitamin D:
- Promotes calcium absorption and maintains healthy bones and teeth
- Supports a healthy immune system
- May reduce the risk of certain cancers
- May improve muscle strength and function
- May improve cognitive function in older adults
- May help with weight management
The human body can produce vitamin D naturally when the skin is exposed to sunlight, but many people do not get enough from sun exposure alone – especially in Vancouver where sunlight may be lacking the majority of the year.
Vitamin D supplementation and/or injections are given to those who have a deficiency of vitamin D, confirmed via recent lab testing. A LifeLabs requisition can be provided by your Naturopathic Doctor to assess levels via a blood test.
Vitamin D can be supplemented orally, but injections are a great alternative. Injections may be a great option for those who have poor gut health, where intestinal absorption of fat-soluble vitamins is suboptimal. It can also be a great alternative for those who were unable to replete their levels via oral dosing, who have difficulty maintaining compliance with oral dosing, and those who have difficulty swallowing pills/capsules.
The injections are given by a naturopathic doctor and are usually done in a series of doses.
Dosing strategy:
The dose of vitamin D is dependent on the patient’s individual needs and the results of blood tests.
An example of deficiency treatment may be an initial injection dose of 50,000IU per week for 6 weeks.
Maintenance therapy can be done via oral dosing or weekly injections of a lower dose dependent on the level of repletion.
It is important to note that, vitamin D overdose is a serious condition and can lead to toxicity, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and weakness, and in rare cases, even kidney damage. Please consult with a qualified healthcare professional before taking any supplement, especially when it comes to injections.
